Nudism in Croatia

Croatia has long been popular for bare-all beach holidays, especially with German and Dutch nudists. Koversada, an island linked by bridge to the Istrian mainland, is the oldest among 30 official naturist resorts. All are indicated by "FKK" signs (from the German Freikorperkultur), but there are also scores of unofficial strips.



Croatia has been an attractive naturist destination for five decades. Today there are more than 30 official naturist campsites, tourist villages, hotels, apartments, beaches and numerous more unofficial naturist bathing places.
Naturism is well accepted all along Croatian Adriatic coast. There are official naturist beaches which are sometimes within all naturist resorts and campings and sometimes there are special areas in textile resorts assigned for naturists. Often entrance is charged.

Germany is known for its relaxed attitude towards nudity; most German saunas are nude and co-ed, topless sunbathing at swimming pools is pretty common, and you'll find many designated nude beaches where you can sun your buns.



If you want to follow the traveler's golden rule “When in Germany, do as the Germans do” and visit a clothes-free beach, look out for signs with the three letters FKK.
FKK stands for Freikoerperkultur ("free body culture"), the practice of nudism that originated in Germany at the end of the 19th century.

It´s Sunday, the last day of the INF Youth Rally 2008, and the weather is warm and sunny. Everyone has flocked to the lawns to suntan, naked obviously. The sun has been coming and going and its been too cold to take off our clothes and be naked. I am getting frustrated we are here for nudism.We are over a hundred  naked youth,15 to 32 years old, from England, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Holland, Portugal and Mexico. We are at a naked campsite called De Vrije Vogels, a half-hour drive from Amsterdam in Holland.

But what is this all about? What is nudism? Well, the International Naturist Federation defines it as : being socially naked in harmony with nature, with the purpose of fostering respect for the environment and one another.

You get a lot of free spirits, some hippies, but generally friendly, open people with no hangups - being naked is for the brave! We have all been waiting for the weather to improve since the rally began on Wednesday. Only a hardy handful were naked for the football and volleyball on Thursday and Friday, and everyone had to be naked for the massage workshop, but that was inside. Today is the first real opportunity for nudism.The naked Dutch are really getting into the free-spirited vibe. They are soaking each other with water balloons, mock wrestling and laughing hysterically. In the distance there are naked shapes playing shuttle ball and taking turns on the zip line.

So what do we do at a naturist youth rally? Well, the day begins differently to start with. We wake up at around 7:30 and make our way sleepily to the communal shower blocks, some naked, some wearing towels, where there are no male and female demarcations. Yes, this means guys and girls shower together and its simply fantastic: the showers are one of the most social places at the rally and a great way to get to know others while soaping up. Plus, when I step out of the shower and grab a towel there is no need to cover up. This takes a while to get used to...........

Why are people nudists?

In my experience as a nudist, there are many reasons why people are nudists:

*they like to be close to nature

*they are into being fit and healthy and vegatarianism - and sunlight and air all over is good for you

*they are exhibitionists

*they are (I can´t reveal this here, that would be giving away too much!)


 Like life, being a naturist is complex. I remember my first time on a beach in Barcelona.
Barcelona has one of the finest naked beaches that can found in a European city centre. Platja De Mar Bella, is a 300 metre long beach and is officially for nudism. It is a short walk from the metro. It even has a sign! I remember the jarring shock of seeing so many naked people! This was the first place that I ever went naked in a public setting. I have really happy naked memories of that day.
